The Journey from Bean to Cup: How Your 4thgen Coffee is Made

Every cup of 4thgen Coffee tells a story—a journey that begins high in the Kenyan highlands and ends in your favorite mug. Join us as we trace the remarkable path our specialty coffee takes from seed to sip.

🌱 Stage 1: Cultivation in the Kenyan Highlands

Our journey begins at high-altitude estates across Kenya, where volcanic soil, ideal rainfall, and perfect temperatures create the conditions for exceptional Arabica coffee. Kenyan coffee farmers, many working land passed down through generations, carefully tend to coffee trees that take 3-4 years to produce their first harvest.

What makes Kenyan coffee special:

  • Grown at 1,400-2,000 meters above sea level
  • Rich volcanic soil packed with nutrients
  • Two rainy seasons allowing for two annual harvests
  • Cool nights and warm days developing complex flavors

🍒 Stage 2: Selective Hand-Picking

Unlike mass-produced coffee, our beans are hand-picked at peak ripeness. Experienced pickers make multiple passes through the coffee groves, selecting only the deep red, perfectly ripe cherries. This labor-intensive process ensures that only the best cherries make it into your cup.

Did you know? A single coffee tree produces only about 1-2 pounds of roasted coffee per year. It takes approximately 2,000 hand-picked cherries to make just one pound of roasted coffee!

💧 Stage 3: Wet Processing

Within hours of picking, cherries arrive at the washing station where they undergo Kenya's signature wet processing method:

  1. Pulping: Outer fruit is removed, revealing the bean
  2. Fermentation: Beans ferment for 24-72 hours, developing flavor complexity
  3. Washing: Multiple washes remove all remaining fruit mucilage
  4. Grading: Beans are sorted by size and density in water channels

This meticulous process is what gives Kenyan coffee its renowned bright acidity and clean, wine-like characteristics.

☀️ Stage 4: Sun Drying

Washed beans are spread on raised drying beds where they're turned regularly by hand over 10-14 days. The Kenyan sun slowly reduces moisture content to the ideal 10-12%, concentrating flavors and preparing beans for storage.

This patient, natural drying process is crucial—rush it, and you lose the nuanced flavors that make specialty coffee special.

🔍 Stage 5: Milling & Grading

Dried beans undergo hulling to remove the parchment layer, then are meticulously graded:

AA

Largest, most prized beans

AB

Medium-large beans

PB

Peaberry (single round bean)

At 4thgen Coffee, we source primarily AA and AB grades—the highest quality beans that deliver exceptional cup profiles.

🔥 Stage 6: Small-Batch Roasting

This is where the magic happens. Our master roasters carefully roast each batch to unlock the unique characteristics of every coffee:

  • Her-King: Roasted to highlight bright citrus and berry notes
  • Heritage Pearl: Developed for delicate floral and stone fruit flavors
  • Legacy Brew: Roasted deeper for chocolate and caramel richness
  • Crown Jewel: Precision-roasted to showcase complex, layered flavors

Small-batch advantage: Unlike industrial roasters processing tons at once, our small batches ensure even roasting and allow us to adjust profiles for each specific lot, maximizing flavor potential.

📦 Stage 7: Packaging & Freshness

Immediately after roasting, we package your coffee in airtight bags with one-way valves that release CO2 while keeping oxygen out. This preserves the complex aromatics and flavors we've worked so hard to develop.

Our freshness promise: Your coffee is roasted to order and shipped within days, ensuring you receive it at peak flavor.

☕ Stage 8: Your Perfect Cup

The final—and most important—stage happens in your kitchen. When you grind our beans and brew your coffee, you're completing a journey that began months earlier in the Kenyan highlands.

Every sip connects you to:

  • ☀️ Kenyan sunshine and volcanic soil
